<image:caption>Winter is a time to rest more so the physical body can restore and prepare for the coming spring. Our pores are more closed and ‘the yang qi goes into hiding’ - Wang Bing. Cold creates contraction, moving our qi to the depths when working correctly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - Winter Qi according to the Nei Jing - Do not disturb the yang [qi]. Go to rest early and rise late. You must wait for the sun to shine</image:title>
<image:caption>In winter it can be good to focus on more gentle activity to avoid bringing the qi to the surface too much. Going to bed early and getting up later with the daylight where possible is advised. 15-20mins spent with the sun warming our backs can be useful for securing and storing Yang qi.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - Winter Qi according to the Nei Jing - Let the mind enter a state as if hidden, [as if shut in] as if you had secret intentions, as if you already had made gains.</image:title>
<image:caption>Going into meditation focusing on deep stillness is what can be beneficial in Winter. When the mind is still and quiet, it is easy to see our self truths. By gently being, creating small ripples rather than waves, in the stillness, secrets/hidden aspects can be revealed and tapping into the universal wisdom becomes easier. Going out less might also be useful to avoid getting cold.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - Winter Qi according to the Nei Jing - Avoid cold and seek warmth and do not [allow sweat] to flow away through the skin. This would cause the qi to be carried away quickly.</image:title>
<image:caption>It is ideal to avoid getting cold, keeping warm in winter. Sweat is considered a precious substance in Chinese medicine (CM). To loose sweat during the season of winter when the physiological functions of the body are focusing on securing and storing (holding the fluids and nourishment within), might allow our qi to flow out of the pores along with the fluid. This could create weak yang making us more prone to sickness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - Winter Qi according to the Nei Jing - This corresponds with the qi of winter and it is the Way of nourishing storage. Opposing it harms the kidneys. In Spring this causes limpness and receding [qi], and there is little to support generation.</image:title>
<image:caption>Following this advice works with winter qi which is thought to nourish the storage and securing function of the kidney system. Going against this natural flow of qi might bring limpness and deplete qi in Spring. This is due to the loss of Yang qi and there not being enough to support the reproductive organs and processes (the kidney system includes fertility systems in CM).</image:caption>

Anchoring in internal peace can help hold the balance even when outside looks like chaos. When that peace is found, project it out into the world for greater effect - we are all learning to be the eye of the storm and follow our own knowing this year.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - Autumn according to the Nei Jing - The three months of autumn, they denote taking in and balance. The qi of heaven becomes tense. The qi of earth becomes bright.</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea for autumn is that we go inward peacefully, acting without hurry, after summers outward expression of qi. This time is thought to be a good time for meditation being more focused on gathering qi so we have the stores available for winter when there is natural lack of abundance. Gathering from the earth and the air and nourishing the Lungs and Large Intestine is key as these are the organs of the Metal system which can find their strength in Autumn.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6340b7cfd71add73c4db8534/fa0ad84c-98ac-45b9-9f8f-78bb995fa483/nguyen-Iv2PXHiNYtw-unsplash.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Resources - Autumn according to the Nei Jing - Go to rest early and rise early, get up together with the chicken. Let the mind be peaceful and tranquil, so as to temper the punishment carried out in autumn. Collect the spirit qi to be balanced. Do not direct your mind to the outside and cause the Lung qi to be clear.</image:title>
<image:caption>Go to bed early and rise with the birds, sleeping longer than in what is advised for the shorter days of Summer. By stilling the mind, and learning tranquility, the harsh truths of self-reflection that arise when we go inward can be softened. Autumn ‘punishment’ could also be associated with violent storms that can come with this season. This was also the time when executions were carried out in ancient China. Metaphorically, we can look at this as cutting away excess after discerning truth from untruth. To ethically discern with neutrality, integrity and humility, speaks to the qualities of Metal when it is harmonious. Breathe, and sound discernment can help to keep the lungs clear. This allows for clarity about what is unnecessary optimising the large intestines ability to eliminate the waste.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - Autumn according to the Nei Jing - This is the correspondence with the qi of autumn and it is the Way to nourish gathering. Opposing it harms the Lung. In winter this causes outflow of [undigested] food and there is little to support storage</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the Way (Dao) to nourish the gathering of qi in autumn. Just as autumn is a time of gathering and harvesting in agricultural terms, so it is with the gathering for our own well-being. Going against these principles can harm the lung function which in winter can cause diarrhoea and a lack of ability to store nutrients which can be important functions of the water organs kidney and bladder in winter. Metal nourishes the water of winter so if we go against the natural qi of this time and tax metal in autumn we might find ourselves on the backfoot, trying to catch up, in the seasons that follow in terms of our well-being.</image:caption>

Summer is the meeting of the skies/heavens - what we dream, and the earth - all that is/was/will be in our worlds. All beings have potential to be fertile and bear fruit/babies/opportunities in summer. Inspiration is easily accessed whether in self, ways of being or projects and fuels our qi in this season.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - the Qi of Summer according to the Nei jing - Go to rest late at night and rise early. Never get enough of the sun. Let the mind have no anger. Stimulate beauty and have your elegance perfected.</image:title>
<image:caption>Summer is a time to sleep less, staying up later with the daylight and waking with it. Bathe in the sun (safely) as much as possible soaking all that comes with it’s light rays (including vitamin D). Transform anger/annoyances into compassion/understanding for whatever/whoever irritation is directed. <image:title>Resources - the Qi of Summer according to the Nei jing - Cause the qi to flow away, as if that what you loved were located outside.</image:title>
<image:caption>By aligning with summer, with the heavens and earth, both internally and externally, an abundance of love and good feeling overflows. In summer, pores are open to allow extra qi to flow out of the body easily. Summer is a time to connect with what is outside of ourselves, sharing our beauty/authenticity with grace/compassion, in whatever varied forms work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - the Qi of Summer according to the Nei jing - This is the correspondence with the qi of summer and it is the Way to nourish growth. Opposing harms the heart. In Autumn this causes jie and malaria, and there is little to support gathering. Multiple disease [develops] at winter solstice.</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the Way/Dao of summer - to encourage and nuture growth and sharing. Going against the natural qi flow of summer might create imbalances in the heart system. Malaria type illness - intermittent chills and fever might surface if there are not enough resources to support the qi of Autumn, which needs to gather in readiness for the reduced winter qi. This is created when pores are not working correctly and the abundant qi gets stuck within rather than flowing outside of ourselves. Further issues could also develop in winter if we go against the natural course of summer qi.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - the Qi of Summer according to the Nei jing - A side note on the Heart system and Shen…</image:title>
<image:caption>Fire includes the Heart system in CM which is responsible for housing the Shen. Shen could be described as self-awareness which brings authenticity. When anchored, it allows for self-reflection, morality & correct communication. By being self-aware, we better know, what Lillian Bridges called, our ‘golden path’…the path of work in our life that fulfills, nourishes and inspires us. Shen is reflected through the eyes and is in part the shine of inspiration that can be seen. When the shen is unsettled, it can be as if the person has an excessive abundance of summer qi. This could manifest as talking without purpose and/or connection, excess laughter or perhaps oversharing, amongst other things. Eventually this type of qi uses up the anchoring substances/resources within, leaving a person deplete. Shen could be viewed as a consciousness which allows emotional well being and balance, when it is aligned correctly, and has substance to keep it anchored/housed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resources - Spring according to the Nei Jing (Ch 2) - The three months of spring; They denote effusion and spreading. Heaven and earth together generate life; The myriad beings flourish.</image:title>
<image:caption>Spring is a time of integrating and expanding. When the heavenly father and earthly mother merge together, they bring fertile vitality which gives rise to the 10 000 things. This talks to the creation of life and can be seen in all aspects of life whether it be of a physical nature or an internal idea, project or way of life. The seasons are perhaps not as defined as what they used to be, however if we observe what nature is doing, we can see what qi to follow.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6340b7cfd71add73c4db8534/09688831-4b9e-48d1-a09f-f5d111035ff4/marc-kleen-tuoBNgI5uLA-unsplash..jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Resources - Spring according to the Nei Jing (Ch 2) - Go to rest late at night and rise early; Move through the courtyard with long strides. Dishevel the hair and relax the physical appearance; Thereby cause the mind (to orient itself on) life.</image:title>
<image:caption>With winter on the way out, we have less of a need to sleep, going to bed later and motivation should start kicking in to wake us earlier. Spring is the time to be relaxed in all things both mentally and physically. Exercise can help this body relaxation which in turn relaxes the mind. By being relaxed in mind and body, we can focus on being present with all life. This presence is what enables the sense of contentment and where compassion and benevolence kicks in for all things.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Resources - Spring according to the Nei Jing (Ch 2) - Give life and do not kill; Give and do not take; Reward and do not punish.</image:title>
<image:caption>The movement of Spring qi is about growth and giving life internally and externally. Here the Nei Jing talks about moving with the qi of Spring rather than Autumn/Winter where things decay and die with focus more internal. Altruism and philanthropy - giving freely to the community. This could be giving to the beings in your backyard, locally, or on a more global level. This is in harmony with the qi of this season and the wood organs (liver and gallbladder). It’s also a great time to give these organs a break so they can rejuvenate. Focusing more on a lighter, plant-based diet rather than the rich, heavy meats of winter that can be harder to digest, is ideal.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6340b7cfd71add73c4db8534/537f8697-9d33-44f3-8b84-81e408714162/spring.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Resources - Spring according to the Nei Jing (Ch 2) - This is correspondence with the qi of spring and it is the Way to nourish life. Opposing it harms the liver.</image:title>
<image:caption>Following/observing the qi of nature and the seasons is following the Dao (the Way). What is happening in our environment, reflects what is happening internally within the physiology of our bodies. This observation has developed a way to nourish ourselves, and as a result, life around us as well. Ignoring the natural cycles and rhythms of our own bodies and life, create stress on our physical systems within and without. Ignoring the needs of the liver during it’s time of strength is thought to create future harm for these organ systems by creating strain and weakening it. Anger, frustration and the need for control are some key emotional behaviours that oppose the liver.</image:caption>
